Moon Jar Intensive

One week throwing the Korean moon jar with Zohra Bonnis, certified by Icheon Pottery Village and trained by Master Lee Hyangkoo at Namyangdoye Studio, Icheon. July 31 – August 7, 2027 · six participants.

Learn two approaches to throwing a Moon Jar on the wheel: in one piece, and in two separately thrown sections joined to create the final form. Taught by an artist certified by Icheon Pottery Village and trained by Master Lee Hyangkoo. Six participants, one week, Porto Heli.

The week moves from foundations to the Moon Jar: clay preparation and centering, cylinder development, building volume, and Moon Jar construction thrown both in one piece and in two joined sections — taught at each participant’s own level, beginner to advanced.

The workshop takes place in a shared studio environment with a maximum of six participants.

Arrival takes place on Saturday from 3 pm. Sunday is a completely free day — rest, swim, or independently visit Spetses, Hydra or Ancient Epidaurus. The programme runs Saturday to Saturday. The week begins with the Welcome Dinner on Saturday evening — participants and the artist meet over a shared meal.

Departure is on Saturday morning. The first ferry departs at 5:45 am. An optional group shared taxi can be arranged for participants travelling together — this is not included in the workshop fee.

Breakfast and light lunch are included during workshop days.

A one-week ceramic workshop focused on developing the skills needed to create the Moon Jar form.

Beginners are guided from clay preparation, centering and cylinder development. Intermediate and advanced participants work from their existing level and progress into greater scale, proportion, wall control, volume and refinement.

Participants explore two approaches to Moon Jar construction: throwing the form in one piece, and throwing it in two sections that are then joined.

Teaching is adapted to each participant’s level.

The Moon Jar · Dalhangari

The Form
& the Teacher

The Korean moon jar — Dalhangari. The workshop focuses on throwing technique, proportion, wall control, joining, shaping and refinement. Techniques only — no glazing and no firing.

It is devoted entirely to this one form — its history, philosophy, and technical demands — through repeated making, failure, and refinement.

Zohra Bonnis has trained in ceramics with masters across four continents over seven years — earning her certification from Icheon Pottery Village, training for one month with Master Lee Hyangkoo at Namyangdoye Studio in Icheon, studying onggi for one month with Master Hyangjong on Jeju Island, completing one month at China’s national ceramics school in Jingdezhen as the only Western student, working alongside Robert Shiozaki (Kyoto University of Art) in his Vancouver studio — his student since 2019 and his apprentice for the last four years, and learning ceramic sculpture in summer with Dominique le Gros at La Borne in France. Her practice extends to Morocco, where she documented the hand-building traditions of the women of Ain Bouchrik village — techniques passed mother to daughter for generations.

She teaches because transmission is part of the work.

Daily Studio Rhythm

The workshop runs through the week in the same studio, Saturday to Saturday. Mornings are structured, afternoons are individual.

Morning Studio

Demonstrations, skill work and guided exercises with Zohra. Teaching is adapted to each participant’s level.

12:30 – 13:30

Lunch

Catered lunch. Studio remains open. Pieces from the morning left to dry or continue under plastic.

13:30 – 16:00

Afternoon Studio

Independent work and individual feedback sessions with Zohra throughout the afternoon.

The Week, Day by Day

The Week — Moon Jar Intensive with Zohra

Day	Focus
Saturday	Arrival from 3 pm. Settle in, explore the surroundings. Communal dinner in the evening.
Sunday	Completely free day — rest, swim, enjoy Porto Heli, or independently visit Spetses, Hydra or Ancient Epidaurus. No scheduled programme.
Monday	Clay preparation and wheel foundations. Wedging, centering, opening and pulling walls. Experienced participants work from their appropriate level.
Tuesday	Cylinder development. Height, even walls, thickness, control and consistency. The cylinder is the technical foundation for the Moon Jar.
Wednesday	Developing volume from the cylinder. Learning to expand the form while maintaining control. Beginning to understand Moon Jar proportion and profile.
Thursday	Moon Jar construction. Demonstration and practice of throwing the form in ONE PIECE. Proportion, volume, wall control and refinement.
Friday	Moon Jar construction in TWO PIECES. Throwing upper and lower sections, understanding proportion and joining the sections. Shaping, joining and refinement.
Saturday	Departure morning. First ferry at 5:45 am. Optional group shared taxi available — not included in the workshop fee.

Teaching is adapted to each participant’s level. Beginners start with clay preparation, centering and cylinders; participants with experience work from their existing level and progress further into scale, proportion, wall control and Moon Jar construction. Advanced participants are not taken through a beginner curriculum.

Participant Agreement

All registered participants receive the Z Gallery Arts Participant Agreement, Liability Waiver, and Studio Safety Rules prior to the first session. Registration is conditional on agreement to all terms.
