Supporting Emerging Contemporary Work – A Talk With Scope’s Alexis Hubshman

Art Fairs 2017 | Angie Kordic

Held annually in New York City, Basel and Miami, the SCOPE Art Show represents one of the most relevant events in contemporary arts today. Focusing on young and emerging galleries and artists, it grew over years, now welcoming over 60 internationally renowned spaces and an ever-expanding schedule of special events, performances and talks. The SCOPE Art Show was founded by gallerist Alexis Hubshman fifteen years ago, as the first fair to run concurrent with the acclaimed Armory Week. They have hosted more than 75 fairs over the course of fifteen years, surprising its audience with each new edition. We talked to Mr. Hubshman about this year’s SCOPE NY and the future fairs in Basel and Miami.

SCOPE’s Alexis Hubshman

“With 59 international exhibitors from 23 countries and 45 cities, SCOPE New York is again poised to lead the charge for the emerging contemporary art market,” says Alexis Hubshman regarding the 2017 fair. ”[It] is our flagship fair, now in its 17th edition. We consider this fair to be a more intimate experience of the emerging contemporary work for which we’re known. The exhibitors at SCOPE New York will be showcasing thought-provoking works engaging themes in the current emerging market. Featured exhibitors include The UK’s Pontone Gallery, New York’s Lyons Wier Gallery, South Africa’s Christopher Moller Gallery and San Francisco’s Spoke Art.” The main novelty this time round is the return to the Metropolitan Pavilion in Chelsea. ”SCOPE’s new Chelsea venue at Metropolitan Pavilion is a more central location to welcome patrons, and we offer a refreshing alternative to the Armory Show; SCOPE is a fair known for new discoveries.”

Future Editions

Between June 13th and 18th, 2017, SCOPE will once again host its show in Basel, for the 11th consecutive time. We’re excited to announce that SCOPE has secured its future in Basel with a long term investment in the City’s rich culture. SCOPE Haus, previously named Clarahuus, will host creative events focused on complimenting Basel’s blooming contemporary art, design, music, and architecture scene,” comments Mr Hubshman. Located just a brief five-minute walk from Art Basel, the well-appointed venue offers collectors the most convenient and ideal view of the contemporary art world available nowhere else. ”SCOPE Basel 2017 will welcome 85 International Exhibitors alongside 10 Breeder Program galleries. Following SCOPE Basel, SCOPE Haus will begin to host cultural events, markets and shows that cater to tastemakers in the city of Basel and beyond.”

SCOPE New York will be held from March 2nd through 5th, 2017 at The Metropolitan Pavilion.
