A quiet place for art to deepen. In Porto Heli, in the Peloponnese, Greece — near the islands of Spetses and Hydra — created for artists across disciplines who need space, silence, and time to work differently.

This is a place for concentration, research, and uninterrupted studio practice — where the landscape becomes part of the process, and the pace of daily life allows the work to shift.

The Z Gallery Arts studio sits in Porto Heli, in the Peloponnese — across the water from two islands that have drawn artists, filmmakers, painters, and writers for over a century, and within reach of Nafplio, Ancient Epidaurus, Mycenae, Nemea, and Corinth. The programme here is not a short course. It is an immersion — in an idea, a material, a technique, in a place that holds time differently.

Hydra, reachable by boat, has no cars and no mass tourism. Leonard Cohen wrote his first novels here in the 1960s. Brice Marden had a house on the island. The Athens School of Fine Arts maintains a year-round annex at the port. This is what the neighbourhood looks like. It has always been this way.

Spetses — equally close — holds its own quiet tradition. Artists exhibit in the alleyways and monastery courtyards. The landscape is the same it has always been: sculpted pines, sea walls, amber light on stone. The kind of place that reminds you why you came to make things in the first place.

Set in Porto Heli, in the Peloponnese, Greece — near the islands of Spetses and Hydra — the residency welcomes two artists at a time for a focused one-month session, creating the conditions for independent practice and meaningful exchange.

This is not a workshop and not a retreat in the conventional sense. There is no curriculum, no group schedule, and no prescribed outcome. It is built for self-directed artists across disciplines — filmmakers, photographers, writers, researchers, designers, painters, sculptors, interdisciplinary and AI/creative-technology artists, and ceramic artists — who work seriously with material, form, idea, and place.

Each resident has a private single bedroom, with shared bathrooms and a shared, fully-equipped kitchen. The residency fee of €2,500 per artist for one month, VAT included includes a private room and studio access. Meals are not included — residents prepare their own meals in the shared kitchen.

A ceramic studio is available for artists working with clay. Clay is not included and is billed separately; it can be pre-ordered through Z Gallery Arts. Each ceramic resident receives one bisque firing and one additional firing; further firings are charged per firing (fee confirmed at application). Kiln use is restricted to experienced ceramicists, competent to use the equipment safely, with prior approval — access is not unlimited.

The Z Gallery Arts International Artist Residency is intended for serious, self-directed artists with a developed practice. Applications are welcomed from artists across disciplines — filmmakers, photographers, writers, researchers, designers, painters, sculptors, printmakers, textile artists, interdisciplinary and AI/creative-technology artists, and ceramic artists. Applicants must be 21 years of age or older.

This residency is best suited to artists who already have a developed body of work and who are seeking focused time for research, production, or the development of a specific project. We are particularly interested in artists whose practice engages deeply with material, process, and long-term artistic inquiry.

For ceramic artists, prior studio experience is expected. The residency is designed for independent practice, not technical instruction, and kiln access is available only to artists who can work safely and confidently within a professional studio environment.

Selection is based on the strength of the work, the seriousness of the proposal, and the relevance of the residency environment to the artist's current practice.

There are no group activities, formal teaching, or structured critique. What the residency offers is space, concentration, and the conditions for meaningful work to unfold.

Selected resident artists may be considered for future exhibitions, publications, or curatorial projects within the wider Z Gallery Arts network. This is never guaranteed, but may develop naturally through the residency and the quality of the work.

Artists may also be invited, at their discretion, to leave one work for the evolving Z Gallery Arts Residency Collection — a long-term archive of artists who have passed through the programme. This is never an obligation and is discussed individually.

Funding Your Residency

Artists are encouraged to explore external funding opportunities in their own country, region, or arts community to support the cost of attending the Z Gallery Arts International Artist Residency.

Depending on the artist's location and practice, possible sources may include national arts councils, regional arts councils, cultural mobility funds, university or institutional grants, professional development grants, travel grants, private foundations, and crowdfunding.

Z Gallery Arts does not provide individual funding advice and cannot guarantee third-party funding. However, accepted artists may request a formal confirmation letter to support external grant, travel-funding, or arts council applications.

The Z Gallery Arts International Artist Residency Fellowship is awarded once per year to support one selected artist for a one-month residency in Porto Heli, Peloponnese, Greece.

The fellowship is intended for an artist whose practice would benefit from focused time, creative research, and immersion in the cultural landscape of the Peloponnese.

The fellowship covers the residency fee for a single one-month residency only.

The fellowship does not cover travel, flights, meals, materials, clay, visas, insurance, transport, extra firings, personal expenses, or any other personal or professional costs.

Selected fellowship artists may apply independently for external grants, travel funds, or arts council support. Upon request, Z Gallery Arts may provide a formal confirmation letter to support external funding applications. Z Gallery Arts does not guarantee third-party funding.

Applicants may work in any discipline, including visual art, ceramics, sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, film, documentary, writing, design, research, curatorial practice, interdisciplinary practice, AI art, and creative technology.

The fellowship is not employment, a job, an assistantship, a work exchange, or visa sponsorship. The selected artist participates as an artist-in-residence.

Artwork Contribution to the Z Gallery Arts Residency Collection

As part of the Z Gallery Arts International Artist Residency Fellowship, the selected artist agrees to contribute one artwork to the Z Gallery Arts Residency Collection at the end of the one-month residency.

The artwork contribution recognizes the residency fee waived through the fellowship and becomes part of the long-term archive and collection of the Z Gallery Arts International Artist Residency.

The artwork will be proposed by the artist and accepted by Z Gallery Arts by mutual agreement. The contribution should be reasonable in scale, safe to store, display, exhibit, or transport, and representative of the artist's residency period or artistic practice.

Ownership of the physical artwork is transferred to Z Gallery Arts. The artist retains copyright and moral rights unless a separate written agreement states otherwise.

Z Gallery Arts may keep, archive, conserve, display, exhibit, photograph, publish, lend, donate, or sell the contributed physical artwork in the future, including to support the residency, fellowship, archive, collection, or programme activities.

If the artwork is exhibited in the future, it may be shown as part of the Z Gallery Arts Residency Collection, with artist credit whenever reasonably possible.

This artwork contribution is not a charitable donation, and no charitable tax receipt will be issued.

The artwork contribution is part of the fellowship terms and must be accepted before the fellowship is confirmed.
