A hillside above the Aegean. Pine trees, stone walls, the sea two hundred metres below. This is where the work happens.

The Z Gallery Arts studio and residency programme takes place in Porto Heli, Peloponnese, Greece. The surrounding islands — Hydra, Spetses — have been home to artists and writers for over a century. This landscape does not ask for your attention. It simply holds it.

Hydra. Spetses. Two islands that have drawn painters, writers, and makers for over a hundred years.

Hydra — reachable by boat — carries one of the most enduring artistic identities in the Mediterranean. Leonard Cohen bought a house here in 1960 for $1,500 and wrote his first two novels on the island. Brice Marden has a house here. The Athens School of Fine Arts maintains a year-round annex at the port. No cars are permitted on Hydra. The silence is a condition of the place.

Spetses holds its own quiet tradition. Artists have lived and exhibited there for decades. Contemporary exhibitions transform alleyways and monastery courtyards into open-air galleries. The same light — sea-reflected, sharp in summer, amber in autumn — has informed Mediterranean painting for two centuries.

The Z Gallery Arts studio is near both. This proximity is not incidental.
